Lucia Nanami (七海 るちあ Nanami Ruchia) is the main protagonist of the anime Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch. She is the first mermaid princess introduced in the series and is the princess of the North Pacific Ocean.

Plot[]

Season 1[]

Lucia is the Mermaid Princess of the North Pacific Ocean, keeper of the Pink Pearl, and the main character of the story. Lucia goes up to land to search for a boy she had saved seven years ago. She is unaware of the danger in the marine world and of her real mission until she is told of them by her "older sister" Nikora Nanami. She is characterized by her simplicity and naivete, but with having a strong will, typical traits of shōjo manga heroines.

Lucia soon falls in love with Kaito Domoto, the boy she had saved seven years ago. However, Kaito is unaware of this and is in love with Lucia's mermaid form.

Later on, after Lucia meets Hanon Hosho and together they befriend Rina Toin together, Rina gets suspicious of Kaito, seeing he had a strange power she couldn't recognize. Soon after, it is revealed in the anime that Kaito is a child belonging to the Panthalassa, which is why he had his powers. When the Princesses reached Gaito's castle and defeated him, Kaito was finally sure Lucia was the mermaid he longed for all his life, later achieving a romantic relationship with her.

Season 2[]

Kaito decides to leave Japan and move to Hawaii where he used to surf with his adoptive father and try to find himself, due to reading a letter his aunt had given him earlier on in the series and needing to clear his thoughts after the ordeal with Gaito. When exchanging their goodbyes, he informs Lucia of the necklace he still wore, which previously held Lucia's pearl, and how it reminds him that he'd always be by Lucia's side and vice versa. After Kaito's departure, Lucia leaves crying and bumps into Rihito Amagi who tries to comfort her and would later on try to befriend her.

Lucia soon finds out through a phone call that Kaito had disappeared and tries to look for him. Sara informs her that he's still alive through a vision in her spirit form. When he returns to Japan, Kaito reveals that he has forgotten his memories of her, as well as Hanon and Rina; however, he remembered everyone else which suggested it wasn't a coincidence. Seira, a mermaid of the Indian Ocean and Sara's successor, was about to be born as well, waiting to meet Lucia. When her time of birth finally came, Michel seized his chance and absorbed Seira into his body causing her birth to be delayed. Sara begged of Lucia to retrieve all the pieces of her heart contained in Mikeru's feathers.

Personality[]

Lucia has undergone quite a bit of character development throughout the series. She is known for having a very upbeat personality and being generally optimistic. She also has a hobby of making handmade jewelry. Within the first arc of the series, it is very rare not to see her display a bright smile on her face. Lucia has a very loving and caring heart, which has proven useful in bring out the good in everyone.

Lucia was shown to have incredible willpower and determination. In the first season, she never stopped trying to have Kaito realize she was the mermaid he was searching for. Although she tried to get the job somewhat quickly at first, she ended up taking a slower, more cautious approach throughout the first season, which proved to be the better path. At the climax of the first season, after Kaito finally was sure he knew Lucia's identity, she was able to finally enjoy an unconditional romantic relationship. Later on, when Kaito lost all memories of her in the second season, she did everything she could to restore those memories, ultimately being successful after some time. She also went out into a blizzard to deliver a bento box that she had promised to give, which almost costed her life.

Lucia's willpower and determination is one side that brings out her strength, but when she has friends' supporting her, she becomes nearly unstoppable. Being the main protagonist and also indirectly being seen as the "leader" of the Mermaid Princesses, she has been targeted by her foes far more than the rest. For instance, she was isolated and banished to an unknown dimension by Gaito, where she was forced to challenge her own heart. Early in season two, she fell into a trap set by the Black Beauty Sisters, but managed to escape using her willpower and Sara's assistance. Later, she was captured again and trapped in Mikeru's dimension in episode 67. With the help of Sara, Seira, and her fellow mermaid princesses singing with her, she was able to escape yet again. She also fought to the bitter end trying to save Seira from harm up until Mikeru absorbed her. Even afterwards, she would slowly but steadily gather Seira's heart fragments one by one until Seira was finally reborn in the penultimate episode.

Lucia is also quite clumsy, something that her lover, Kaito, has acknowledged himself. This is proven when she struggles to properly perform some of her chores that Nikora gave her around the hotel. She has also overslept sometimes, as well as having had a few accidents going up and down the stairs. Her sense of direction has shown to be rather lackluster. Furthermore, Lucia has shown to be rather naïve. Some examples are not knowing the consequences of losing her pearl, and not being aware of the troubles at sea until Nikora informed her. Throughout the countless days, battles, and lessons she went through with her friends, she would slowly shed her naïve side and prove that she has what it takes to be a Mermaid Princess.

Throughout most of the first season, Lucia also displayed a slight jealous side of her that would often come out in her relationship to Kaito. Due to Kaito's popularity in school, she had to face stiff competition from many other girls that also showed interest in him. At times, she has misjudged and misunderstood situations presented around him, usually causing her to get angry. It would usually take a firm, but truthful explanation from Kaito to actually have Lucia understand that she had misjudged him.

In the second arc of the series however, she is much more depressed due to her struggle of having to deal with the pain and loneliness of being forgotten by a loved one. She also had to deal with the pain of failing to complete her mermaid duties revolving around Seira. Having to deal with these issues in a short time frame deeply wounded her. This pain was so deep that her jealousy was very rarely shown. However, she was shown to cry a lot more than usual. Despite the setbacks, no matter the situation, she never gave up hope. Through her tears and her friends' moral support, Lucia steadily used this pain to grow and mature deeply, while maintaining her kind heart and unwavering determination. She also mellowed drastically, having the will to walk away from her loved one to fulfill her mermaid duties.

Appearance[]

Lucia has dirty blond hair in her human form and bright blonde hair in her mermaid and idol form. She also has brown eyes in her human form but blue eyes while as a mermaid or an idol. She usually wears a shell locket that contains her pearl.

In her every day outfit she seems to wear either a white and red shirt with a denim skirt and knee-high boots. Other she seems to wear the same outfit with the only difference being her shirt, which instead has big black and pink stripes.

In her Idol form as well as her Princess form she wears different kinds of outfits which include fluffy pink skirts.

Forms and Aspects[]

As a mermaid, Lucia has to transform into a human in order to stay on land. When facing a sea demon, she transforms into her idol form, Pink Pearl Voice, and uses her voice as offensive attack. The Sea Demons and enemies are frequently injured by the frequency of her voice as well as emotions the song contains, which generally have the subject of hope and love.

Lucia’s mermaid form is the same as every other mermaid princess, with a bracelet around one of her upper arm and double pearl bracelet around one of her wrists and her tail. Lucia's mermaid princess form is first revealed in chapter 6 of the manga and episode 13 of the anime. Her hair is loose and barely in pigtails, the tips of which have been loosely curled. There are also glittering pearls and flower petals strewn throughout her hair. She wears lacy elbow length gloves, and her dress has three bows in the center as well as three layers of cloth, all centered in the front. Lucia appeared two more times in this form, in chapter 14 and chapter 19 of the manga with minor differences, such as adding a choker of laces and changing the petal flowers into roses.

Lucia’s mermaid form and her human form contrast the most out of all the mermaid princesses. She has shoulder length dark blonde hair and brown eyes while on land, and long lighter blonde hair in pigtails and light blue eyes as a mermaid. She's mostly seen wearing a pink and red sailor style school uniform (short sleeves for summer and long sleeves for winter). In the manga her hair is darker than in the anime.

When facing enemies, Lucia transforms into her idol form, Pink Pearl Voice. In her idol form, she sings with the rest of the mermaid princesses to defeat the enemies by singing songs that convey their true emotions. Her first outfit is complete with a pink dress with short skirt, lacy pink gloves, and boots. Lucia, along with Hanon and Rina, gains her second outfit in episode 28 after the trio was upgraded by the sea goddess, Aqua Regina. Her second outfit is very noticeably different from her first one. Her dress now is complete with a double layer and a long pink bow on the back. Her gloves and her boots now have a second layer. She also gains accessories such as a jeweled headpiece, a more intricate bracelet, and pink accents alongside the top part of her dress. It should be noted that their transformations are somewhat based off of the general format of their school uniform. Like all the other mermaid princesses, Lucia’s second transformation is more powerful than the first one and enables her to defeat the Black Beauty Sisters with her new songs.

Appearance in[]

Anime[]

Appears in every episode of season 1 and season 2.

Abilities[]

Like the rest of the mermaid princesses, Lucia needs her pearl in order to transform into her idol form. Her pearl is also needed in order to summon Aqua Regina. When in her idol form, her voice was transmitted by a microphone like object called the E-pitch, in order to defeat the enemies. Her voice is shown to be very powerful. She is also shown wearing Aqua Regina's outfit in the last volume of the manga. Her hair is loose. She also holds Aqua Regina's staff. Legend of Mermaid was a song that she would sing as child, so this is one of her image songs.

Her character songs are 'Splash Dream, 'Legend of Mermaid and 'Koi wa Nandarou'. She ends attack songs with the phrase 'Love Shower Pitch' in both the anime and manga followed by 'Encore wa ika ga' which can be translated as 'How about an encore'?

Transformations[]

Pink Pearl Voice! (ピンクパールボイス! Pinku Pāru Boisu!) is the transformation phrase Lucia Nanami uses in the anime and manga series to transform into an idol. In episode 1 of the anime's first season, when Kaito throws his pendant (with the pink pearl inside it) towards her, the pink pearl suddenly turns into an E-Pitch because she never says this phrase

Pichi Pichi Pitch[]

Pure[]

Lucia calls out "Pink Pearl Voice" indicating the initiation of the transformation. Her pearl begins to glows and it comes out of her pendant, turning into her microphone. Then Lucia's pink boots and gloves appear. She takes her microphone in her right hand and twirls around and strikes a pose. After Aqua Regina giving Lucia, an upgrade in outfits, Lucia can transform into her second idol form. Her new top appears then her skirt, each with an extra layer. Her boots and gloves appear, also with a new layer. A notable new accessory is her long, dark pink bow tied at her waist and her headpiece.

Etymology[]

  • The name Lucia means "light" in Spanish, Italian and Latin.
    • Although her name is spelt as Lucia, it is pronounced as Luchia (although this caused the English, Portuguese and Thai dub to pronounce her name as LuCia. The French version even goes as far as completely changing it to "Lucie", a common name in said language).
    • Ruchia is written in hiragana (るちあ), which has no special meaning. However, when written in kanji (光愛, 瑠亜, 留智亜 or 琉千明), it could possibly mean:
      • 光愛 - "light" (光) (ruchi) and "love, affection" (愛) (a).
      • 瑠亜 - "lapis lazuli" (瑠) (ruchi) and "second, Asia" (亜) (a).
      • 留智亜 - "detain, fasten, halt, stop" (留) (ru) (ru), "wisdom, intellect" (智) (chi) and "second, Asia" (亜) (a).
      • 琉千明 - "precious stone, gem, lapis lazuli" (琉) (ru), "thousand" (千) (chi) and "bright, light, clear" (明) (a).
  • Lucia's surname Nanami means "seven" (七) (nana) and "sea, ocean" (海) (mi).

Trivia[]

  • Like all North Pacific mermaids, Lucia was born on a Monday.
  • Unlike all other mermaids, North Pacific mermaids' hair and eyes do not match their tail color. Instead, they seem to have blonde or brown hair and sky blue eyes.
  • Lucia and Hanon share the same image song in the first season of the Italian dub.
  • While never directly acknowledged on screen, it is likely that Lucia had her 14th birthday around Episode 14 and her fifteenth around Episode 66, as the series largely aired in pseudo real time, with the episode air dates roughly corresponding to the date the episode takes place on.
  • Lucia is one of two characters to have appeared in all 91 episodes, the other being Hanon.
  • Lucia is the only mermaid princess whose Coming of Age Ceremony was confirmed to have been delayed.

  1. The anime episode air dates roughly match their in series date, so we can assume that her 14th Birthday happens around Episode 14, and her 15th Birthday happens around episode 66. This implies that Lucia would be 14 by the end of the first arc and 15 by the end of the second.
