Hanon Hōshō (宝生 波音 Hōshō Hanon) is the deuteragonist of the Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch anime. She is the mermaid princess of South Atlantic ocean and the owner of the Aqua Pearl.

History[]

Pichi Pichi Pitch[]

Unlike Lucia Nanami, Hanon came onto land to escape from the water demons that had destroyed her kingdomand forced the mermaids living there to flee.

Hanon first meets Lucia at school, in episode 1 of the anime, where they become fast friends. Later on, she and Lucia met Rina and befriended her as well, causing them to develop into best friends. Hanon meets their music teacher Tarō Mitsuki, whom she starts secretly adoring and refers to as "Tarō-chan". In the beginning, she thought of Rina and Caren as struck-up because they'd keep to themselves and Caren would always reject the three mermaids' offers to join them. Later on she changed her opinion of the two princesses.

Hanon gets to know of Tarō's past affair with Sara and becomes heartbroken upon learning that Tarō still had feelings for her and accepted her invitation to live in the Gaito's castle together. Realizing that Tarō would essentially be held captive forever, her and the other princesses follows him but fails to rescue him.

After reaching the castle and freeing Coco and Noel, she witnesses Sara's and Tarō's love still being alive and expresses that she'd let Taro go and move on.

Pure[]

Hanon goes back on her word to move on from Tarō after Sara passed away at the end of the first season. She does this knowing that Sara wouldn't be with him anymore, but is disappointed beyond belief when Tarō announces his decision to fly to Germany to continue studying music and deal with the issue of love. Before he leaves to catch his flight, he gifts Hanon a sheet music for a composition he wrote for her along with a letter. Unfortunately, gusts of wind blow the envelope containing the music sheets out of her hands at the airport and another boy finds it. When Nagisa, the boy, discovers that Hanon is the rightful owner of the music sheets, he tries to impress her. Hanon doesn't seem to be attracted to Nagisa for a while due to his childish behavior and rejects his advancements for a while. Later on, however, she finally develops feelings for him and they kiss under the starry sky, sealing their relationship.

Personality[]

Hanon is a kind, generous, and friendly mermaid, but acts quite different when it comes to boys. At first, she thought it was wrong to love humans, but after falling in love with Tarō Mitsuki, she quickly changed her mind. Similar to Lucia, Hanon tends to feel jealous rather easily when she senses other girls adoring Tarō, and vice versa. Hanon also has a playful nature and sometimes enjoys teasing her friends.

Hanon has been shown to be somewhat hot-headed, bitter, and even stubborn when overcome by love. Her aggressive nature has been shown multiple times throughout the anime, such as running off alone to search her lover's music sheets and risking her own life after her lover was taken prisoner by Sara. This often leads to trouble for Hanon, especially when she goes too far and does not think about her own safety.

Hanon seems to have some trouble setting her priorities straight. When her kingdom was attacked, Hanon initially focused on her kingdoms' residents' safety until she was literally begged by her close servants to escape and avoid capture. Hanon has sometimes dropped everything for her lover, usually causing some strain among her friends. Despite this, she has shown to set aside these feelings at the most critical moments, albeit reluctantly.

According to Meru in episode 18, Hanon appears to have a great habit at keeping promises, no matter how difficult they are. There have been periods of time where she has been unable to fulfill them; however, the other party is usually aware that she did do everything she could to fulfill it.

Hanon is very knowledgeable about love, which she uses often to help her best friends gradually develop strong, healthy relationships with their lovers. Although her suggestions are not always accurate, she usually has been able to offer at least one idea to her friends when they are struggling with their personal feelings and thoughts. She also has a passion for fashion and make-up. In addition, she enjoys shopping for clothes with her friends. Ironically, though Hanon seems to know relationships better than her best friends, she also struggled with her own. In season two, she was forced to challenge her feelings over her second lover, but with the help of her friends and a letter from her first lover, Hanon eventually found the courage and strength to seal her relationship with her second lover for the foreseeable future.

When trying to protect what she loves most, Hanon has shown to have an incredible amount of resilience (perhaps even on a similar level to Lucia's willpower). In the first season's penultimate episode, she boldly stepped in to prevent Sara from hurting Tarou, even allowing Sara to take her anger out on her. Even after taking the full force of Sara's powerful singing, she eventually managed to hold her ground and resist Sara's sheer power. This bold act of sacrifice and love would catch Sara's attention, setting the stage for Sara's reformation. In addition, she opted to give up her relationship with Tarou (albeit briefly) after understanding Sara was Tarou's first lover.

Appearance[]

Hanon has brown eyes in her human form, but she has aqua blue eyes in her mermaid form. Her hair in human form is shorter and has a darker, more azure color than her mermaid form, and the accessories are different. She always wears her Pearl Tear around her neck containing her Aquamarine Pearl.

Forms and Aspects[]

Human Form

Hanon's main form is her Mermaid Form. To stay on land, Hanon needs to use her Human Form and is able to switch from both forms back and forth by getting wet or drying herself. To transform into her Idol Form, Hanon shouts out Mizuiro Pearl Voice using the power of her pearl to ward off enemies.

Human Form[]

Her human form is significantly different from her mermaid form. Hanon's long aqua hair has the same hair style, but becomes shorter and grows darker. She also has brown eyes in her human form. She usually wears a pair of barrettes with flowers on the hinge ends, crossed like an 'X' in her bangs, and she is seen in many outfits. Standing at 153cm tall, she is the second shortest mermaid princess after Seira.

When in her mermaid form, Hanon has long, wavy, blue hair with two stars in her bangs. She wears an aquamarine clam-shell bra, and a bracelet around her upper left arm. On her darker blue tail, and on her wrist, she wears double navy blue pearl bracelets. She wears a shell locket containing her pearl around her neck just as she does in all her forms, and star earrings.

Idol Form[]

Hanon Idol Form

Hanon transforms into her Idol Form, Mizuiro (Aqua) Pearl Voice, so she can defeat enemies with her songs. Her idol form consists of a short light blue strapless dress, with gloves and boots to match it. The dress is light blue and the skirt is sky blue with three layers and ruffles. Her gloves and boots are baby blue with pearl bracelets on her ankles and wrists. She still wears her star barrettes, earrings, and like all the other mermaid princesses, her shell necklace.

Hanon Super Idol Form

Starting in episode 28, Hanon, along with Lucia and Rina, received new upgrade outfits by the sea goddess, Aqua Regina, making them even more elaborate. Her boots and gloves now have an extra layer and there are ruffles on her top piece. The bottom two layers of her skirt are a lighter shade of blue and the top layer stays the same shade. Her hair grows longer, darker and much more wavier. Hanon does not gain another accessory like Lucia and Rina, but still keeps her star barrettes. Hanon and Lucia's Idol Form are very similar with a few slight changes. As it is true with all the mermaid princesses, Hanon's second transformation is more powerful than the first one and enables her to defeat the Black Beauty Sisters with her new songs.

Powers[]

Like the rest of the mermaid princesses, Hanon needs her pearl in order to transform into her idol form. Her pearl is also needed in order to summon Aqua Regina. When in her idol form, her voice is transmitted by a microphone like object called the E-pitch and is used to defeat the enemies.

She says "Love Shower Pitch!" in the anime in order to defeat enemies.

Her image songs are 'Ever Blue' and 'Mizuiro no Senritsu'.

Transformations[]

Mizuiro Pearl Voice (水色パールボイス Mizuiro Pāru Boisu) is the phrase Hanon Hōshō uses in the anime and manga series to transform into an idol.

Hanon's transformation is very much like Lucia and Rina's. Her pearl transforms into her E-pitch microphone. Boots appear on her feet then her gloves. Then she holds her microphone and strikes a pose.

After Aqua Regina gives the trio the upgrade in outfits, Hanon's can transform into her second idol form. The first part to transform is her top. Her skirt is slightly longer than her old one and her boots and gloves have an extra layer. A new noticeable accessory on her is a long, blue bow tied on the back of her waist. Her microphone also transforms into a more intricate design.

Etymology[]

  1. The anime episode air dates roughly match their in series date, so we can assume that her 14th Birthday happens around Episode 08, and her 15th Birthday happens around Episode 60. This means Hanon would be 14 by the end of the first arc and 15 by the end of the second.
